Hey, I’m Travis.

I thought it’d be handy to give you a little background about myself, what I do, and what direction I’m trying to go in.

My wife and I

My wife and I

I’m 37 and live in Asheville, North Carolina (my hometown, where I grew up on a little farm). I spent around a decade of my life living abroad in places like Bangkok, Prague, Barcelona, Ho Chi Minh City, and Taipei. International travel is still a fairly big part of my life (I’m writing this from Barcelona), but I am settled into mostly being in Asheville, NC at this stage in my life (my family is here). My goal is to spend ~ 4 months a year abroad.

My Professional History

Due to the nature of this position, we would be working together quite closely. Therefore, I think it’s a good idea to tell you about myself, what I do, and where I am.

I’ve been an entrepreneur by personality basically since birth, but started working on building my first small business around the age of 22. Since then I’ve built another dozen companies, and sold a few of them along the way. I think I’m probably very much the “entrepreneur type”, meaning I move fast when I have ideas, don’t mess with formality, and tend to be a bit of a mess with organizing and managing stuff.

I have been involved in just about every type of business imaginable. I’ve founded SaaS companies, physical product biz’s, marketing agencies, info products, etc. This is important because it is still how I operate, I don’t just do “one thing”.

I’ve sold many of my companies, but currently I still own my 10-year old marketing agency, a vitamin company, an investing community, and a lot of smaller projects. At this point in my career I no longer work much in the day-to-day of any of the companies (I have a fantastic team). I meet with them each week to go over the high level operations.

Part of the reason I don’t really work “in” the companies is that I think I’m a terrible manager. This is important for you to know. Great founder, good owner, bad manager or CEO. If I’m the boss then I tend to not to have great communication or structure about where I want to go (”why can’t they see inside my head?”). I believe that I’m great to the team, never micromanage or get angry, but I’m not the one to organize unless it’s early in a companies life.
